3. April 7 A RALLY FOR ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE: “DON’T PAVE OVER OUR FUTURE”

TIME: Lunchtime (12:15pm - 12:45pm)

LOCATION: beside the future Costco site (at lights in front of Home Depot, Corbett Place, along new Maryland Hwy)

On Thursday, April 07, 2011, at lunchtime (12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m) - a week before the meeting of the UNB Board of Governors in Fredericton - the Friends of the UNB Woodlot invite students, faculty, alumni, and the general public to take a stand for action on climate change. A rally along the New Maryland Highway is to be held, as well as a taping-off event of the Corbett Brook Marsh and Larch Swale in the UNB Woodlot.

This is to highlight the fact that the 80-metre wetland buffer guarantee by UNB has been broken for Costco, and to show our solidarity for the protection of wetlands that protect us from the catastrophic rains of climate change. We want to hold the UNB Board of Governors accountable and ask them to prevent any building within this 80-metre buffer. In the spirit of a public rally asking for action on climate change, citizens are invited to bring signs and any objects that give attention to our concern for the future, including umbrellas, life jackets, water wings, inner tubes, snorkels, air mattresses, and canoes. For all the thousands of people who walk their dogs in the UNB Woodlot, we would encourage you to bring your companion animal – and a dog life jacket if you have one!

“The message at the rally is simple. Don’t pave over our future and our children’s future,” says Caroline Lubbe-D’Arcy with the Friends of the UNB Woodlot. “We expect many high school and university students to attend this rally. In solidarity, come out with your neighbour, your UNB faculty member, your family, your grandparents, or your fellow recreational user of the UNB Woodlot!” “The UNB Board of Governors approved development of the UNB Woodlot with the explicit understanding that any development would take place no closer than 80 metres from Ecologically Sensitive areas,” says Monika Stelzl with the Friends of the UNB Woodlot. “Yet the UNB Administration is proceeding this spring with the Costco building and parking lot that will be only 30 metres from Corbett Brook Marsh, in violation of the 80-metre guarantee made to the UNB Board of Governors. And development plans for the Costco gasoline station are only 30 metres from Larch Swale.”
